Poems by Sultan Valad

Sultan Valad was Rumi's son, his biographer, and his spiritual successor. He formally founded in the Mevlevi Order of Sufis following his father's teachings.

Sultan Valad is quoted as saying, "When the saints compose poetry they express the essence of the (holy) Qur'an, because they have effaced their own ego in the divine and move according to God's Will. ...Professional poets suppose that the poetry of the saints is no different from their own, but the breeze blowing over a garden brings fragrance whereas the same breeze blowing over a refuse heap brings ordure. If you have any sense of smell you can tell the difference."  (Rumi Past and Present, East and West. p.328. Lewis. One World (Oxford) 2000)
