Kul Himmet was born in central Turkey. His poetry was very influential in the Alevi-Bektashi Sufi tradition.

When Pir Sultan Abdal, a fellow Sufi poet and social activist was hanged, Kul Himmet had to go into hiding for many years to avoid a similar fate.

According to the authors of Quarreling with God, "Kul Himmet was devoted to the idea of the Divine expressed through humanity."
