Ann Griffiths was born Nansi (Ann) Thomas to a farming family in Wales.

Hearing the sermon of an visiting Methodist preacher in 1796, Ann converted to Methodism, becoming deeply dedicated to her faith. Through her profound spiritual surrender, Ann began entering mystical states she called "visitations," during which she might experience great bliss or an outpouring of tears, sometimes completely lost to the outer world.

Ann married a local farmer, Thomas Griffiths, soon after her father's death in 1804. The next year, in 1805, she gave birth to child that died in childbirth. Two weeks later Ann herself died.
