    Attacked by
    a 7 a.m. smile, the pamphlet drew
    swift blood with the words,

    KNOW YOUR FUTURE!

No sooner mobbed by proofs and prayers
and surrounded by receives and repents,
the biblical tommie gun of shoulds
    and should nots burst
    out of hiding and
    opened fire

With some awkward excuse for a shield,
I turned and fled the smoke
    back to the present,
    his Christian mask
    retreating into the bright morning
    smile still unsheathed
    pointed at me,
    sharp as ever

I looked at the dogs - so
blessed at knowing when to turn noses
and lock teeth when rotten things
    land on good china

never feeding on anything trailing strings

and handing a look of disbelief
    to human speech that
    doesn’t decode
    into food
    or play
    or love . . .

O, Woofie. Such a wonderful poem! You hit every nerve!

The last lines remind me of Eat, Pray & Love a wonderful book by Elizabeth Gilbert. Tis the story of a woman on a pilgrimage in Italy, India & Indonesia.

Jack Kornfield and Anne Lamont wrote reviews. 2010 movie.

I highly recommend it.

oh amberhoney, I shorely do wish I could give you a huge fat kiss for this one!

especially for this Pulitzer line: "never feeding on anything trailing strings"...

and also ..."his christian mask"...ANOTHER beauty...

they've all got 'em, don't they?...

all of them religious clubs and cliques...

it don't really matter which one...take your pick...close your eyes and point...

if it's a religion, and it's yours, it's got you wearin' a mask...

they're all about pretendin'...

BIG hugs,
mikey
