Yose ben Yose lived in the fourth or fifth century in Jewish Palestine.

He is the first of the pre-classical paytanim (composers of piyyut, Jewish liturgical poetry) known by name in the region, and many consider his work to represent the crystalization of Jewish poetry that paved the way for later masters, like Eleazar Kallir.

Despite his importance, practically nothing is known about Yose ben Yose's life. He is sometimes referred to as "hayatom" or "the orphan" giving us one intriguing detail about his life.
